Kristina Gjerde has sadly passed away on the eve of the BBNJ Agreement, with which she was so involved, coming into force. Amongst her many other roles, Kristina was a founding proponent and inspiration for GOBI. She pushed relentlessly for sound science to better understand deep-sea ecosystems to inform their protection. Since its inception in 2008, Kristina served on the GOBI Scientific Steering Committee, providing direction and insight. As a lawyer she often posed the crucial questions that decision-makers need answers to from the scientific community. She was a highly respected voice at international negotiations to conserve and sustainably use the ocean. Kristina had a gift of being able to bring stakeholders together, easily located at the heart of the action with her distinctive white hair and winning smile. She also encouraged young researchers to engage and reach out to others, confidence building and growing new talent using her exemplary networking skills. A key member of our inner circle, a true professional and friend – Kristina will be very much missed.
